I was travelling on a train cross-country and in front of me sat a young mum with her about six-year-old son. She seemed to think that her boy needed shouting at and chastising on a regular basis, which she did in a really ugly voice. The poor guy couldn’t do anything right and was really cheeky in answering her back. The mum’s mobile phone rang and immediately her voice and demeanour changed as she chatted on the phone to her friend. You wouldn’t have believed it was the same person. Amazingly for the whole time that his mum was on the phone – at least twenty minutes – the little boy changed and he was a happy, smiling, normal child. What a pity she doesn’t appreciate him and speak to him as she does to her friends. Perception!
Recently my nephew’s wife gave birth to their first child. We went to view the newest addition to the family clan.
‘Come in. Come and see our boy. He’s so perfect, he weighed 8.5 pounds at birth, his length was 53cm and the circumference of his head was… what was it again, Mike? Isn’t he just perfect? Just look at his toes. They’re long like mine but just curl at the ends like Mike’s. Can you remember if Mike had such a mop of dark hair when he was born?’ said Jules.
It just went on and on. They were both just so thrilled with their little son. Both were very hands on parents, handled little Samuel so lovingly and confidently that it was a joy to see them. They had tried long and hard to have him and I am sure that Sam will never be a pain to his parents.
